But the question remains - why is "Mac" in the variable name? On an App Store that doesn't support any Macs.

It could be nothing, a naming convention carried over, but it is odd.

Yes, we don't know what conventions Apple use for placeholder names, it could be that ix.Mac is a prefix for ALL their placeholder names. The reason could be something as far fetched as 'ix' as in all i-devices, 'Mac' for everything derived from Mac OS X, could be no real reason at all.
Many manufacturers use the term 'CPU' to referr to their entire computer branch of their business, which is also confusing since a CPU really is something very specific

Oh please, get off your PC high horse for a second and come back to reality. Yeah, no one should get beat up and bullied. I'd also love for the world to be filled with rainbows and unicorns all the time too. However, if I walk around drunk in a bad part of town flashing a suitcase full of cash, well I shouldn't be shocked that I get robbed. I know people don't like to take personal responsibility for their actions these days and everyone's ready to sue someone else because nothing is ever their fault. But most reasonable people should realize that being drunk in the ghetto as a transgendered guy isn't the brightest idea.

    Not "the brightest idea"?

What difference does it make exactly?

Does it make her any less assaulted?

Does it make a video of of her assault and outing any less all over the internet?

Does it make the perpetrators justified?

Does it make it OK that nobody properly intervened?

But none of that is important really. You think she's stupid. You think expecting a basic level of human rights and dignity, that's the same as expecting the world to be filled with rainbows and unicorns all the time.

Just dimiss it and carry on with your life.

    There's nothing you can change.

    Donating (http://www.glccb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=34&Itemid=97) probably (http://www.survivorproject.org/support.html) doesn't help.

Writing to your (http://www.senate.gov/) representatives (http://www.house.gov/)? What's the point?

    Volunteering (http://www.glccb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=30&Itemid=48) isn't an option.

Letting McDonalds know (http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/contact_us.html) your custom requires them to work to prevent this in the future, why bother?

And, most pointless of all, developing your own understanding of trans issues, becoming a trans advocate and ally in your own life, and simply unreservedly condemning discrimination and violence against trans people without telling people how it is their own fault.. well, that's like rainbows and unicorns.

The world is an awful place. And you have your own problems, we've all got our own problems. People should just be more careful. Less stupid.

Yeah, when the poll was loading I expected 80-90% to be concerned about security, turns out only 40% are. So many ignorant "blissful" people that excuse Apple and think "It's Apple, of course it's safe". Obviously it's not. Ten serious exploits in about as many days of looking (they spent 30 days total, about an equal amount on linux and mac, and the rest on other OS's, so 10 should be right) and that is just scratching the surface. I was shocked that Apple actually had so many vulnerabilities, and for those that didn't find it scary that someone can install a program with kernel access simply by having you download their dmg file (not even opening it), well they're just being silly and need to realize that this is and some extremely bad things can happen if we are to go by that analysts words (saying OS X is not hot on security and that it is easy to find new hacks). :p

Not at all. I voted no, and I did so because I've spent enough time reading through vulnerability assesments to know that <i>all</i> software has problems, therefore I tend not to light my hair on fire and run around screaming the sky is falling the minute someone finds a flaw or a vector of flaws like the MOKB. Instead, I pay attention to the results, take steps to mitigate any possible problems, and then wait for the Security Update from Apple. The sooner the update happens, like the quick fix for the iAdware flaw, the happier I am.

Furthermore, one of the MOKB flaws is just a bug and is not actually a security vulnerability. The dmg vulnerability, wherein a malformed disk image can crash OS X and during this inject uknown code, has been debunked according to this guy (http://alastairs-place.net/2006/11/dmg-vulnerability/).

So, no I'm not concerned. I'm watchful, but I'm going to withhold the running and screaming and the Apple-better-*******-fix-this! rant until something serious happens.

You do know everyone who has a changelog is under NDA, don't you? Why don't you just go look at the change log?

You know full well that not everyone who comes here is a developer and are running Lion through other means. I am sick of these posts over and over with people acting all high up and saying things like "Why don't you just go look at the change log?" or "Why don't you send the bug report to Apple" or "Why don't you just post it on Apple developer forums?". Each of these posters know full well what they are doing and it is annoying.

MacRumors is for Mac enthusiasts and many of its members want access to previews/betas even without being a developer.

How come no one is ever upset when MR posts information they shouldn't be on the homepage? I don't see people getting upset about them posting change logs when they become available.

    Gr!

Yeah, it's all about one guy who was leader of the bad men. And none of the bad men could think for themselves, and now he's gone, they won't know what to do - and we'll all be happy and safe.
    Sleep well!

I don't think anyone believes that this will be the end of terrorism. Just like America wouldn't collapse if our President was assassinated. But it would still be a pretty big deal right?

I wouldn't be cool with the teardrop shape. I love the design of the iPhone 4 and would be disappointed if they went a different direction.

But, I'm sure we will be hearing rumors about many different designs between now and the actual unveiling.

Maybe I need more RAM, but I was dissapointed to be reminded of Virtual PC, the way it totally slows the rest of my Mac down...

If you are going to run two operating systems then your computer needs to have the resources for the sum of the two systems. So if Mac OSX needs 1GB to run well and so does Windows XP then you need 2GB of ram. Same for the CPU. If a 2Ghz is needed for Windows and a 2Ghz chip for MacOS then you need either a 4Ghz chip or a two core 2Ghz chip. You don't get anything for free. If you want to run two computers you need twice the hardware.

I'll bet this runs great on a Mac Pro

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

This is a new low for Samsung. Apple had a specific complaint about a specific device. Now Samsung replies with this patent nonsense? Really it makes Samsung look desperate and weak.

I bet one day in the near future Samsung will regret this move. Apple will source other fabs for their business. Micron, AMD's spun-off foundry, heck even Intel would probably work something out just for Intel. These American companies wouldn't steal Apple's IP.

Patent nonsense? Do you know what claims Samsung are making? You know, Samsung has alot of technological patents, technologies that the end user knows and cares little about.
We can all see that the Galaxy S look strikingly similar to the 3GS (both look cheap imho) but it's hard for us to see if Apple simply stole technologies from Samsung and put it under the hood)
This doesn't necessarily make Samsung look desperate and week, maybe they up til now simply didn't care that their patents were infringed upon since they felt they had a great collaboration with Apple but when Apple all of sudden decides to pull this off; no more mr nice guy.
Don't be so quick to make assumptions.

It has something unique, look at all the press covering it now, and how many of us are talking about it.

Just because it's being talked about doesn't make it unique. So what is unique about it?

And people are only talking about it because it's an announcement from a huge company. Which has nothing to do with whether it will actually sell well or not.

Ok ok , I havent read alll the 7 other pages but ... I noticed something on the mouse description :

    Bluetooth technology, ultimate portability

With its secure, reliable Bluetooth technology, wireless Mighty Mouse goes wherever you do. Pair it with any Bluetooth-enabled Mac to work untethered and uncluttered at your desk or on the go, and it operates with either one or two AA batteries no bulky dock required.

I thought it was an error ... but no . Yoiu can either use 1 or 2 batteries ... isnt that cool. So, if you are like me, when your wireless mouse is dying ... and you can only find 1 bat. that is cool :D:)

It's ok that Macs are overpriced big time, no problem that they come with not so up to date hardware yet people bitch that they are 'screwed' cause they will need a new... bumper case....

Hahaha. I just can't stop laughing.

wow, this is awful, ****ing capitalists apple. This is why I'll use soundcloud and NOT apple cloud.

Then we got this guy over here. If you don't like capitalists what the **** are you doing on a macrumors forum? If 20 bucks made you just **** your pants, how did you afford a Mac or a iPad or iPhone. Not to be a dick but, Shouldn't you be buying some horse **** 3rd world version of the iPad from a lepar off the back of a horse buggy or something? SoundCloud has over a million subscribers, for a argueably less intuitive platform. Thats not capitalism?

This news will hopefully inspire Apple to make the next generation iPods even more amazing. However, I don't see MS as the biggest threat to the iPod. I am much more concerned about mp3 cellphones with 4Gb flash (see e.g. SonyEricsson).
Apple needs come up with a revolutionary device that integrates an iPod with a cellphone and possibly even a GPS, in order to keep their mp3 marketshare.

And when MRAM comes to the market - I hope Apple gets that first, it'll mean a HUGE advantage for whomever.

Apple would be out of their mind to enter this market...

They have a low cost device that can hook up with any TV in the market today... So why would they ask consumers to choose their ENTIRE TV set-up to get at "that on steroids." That gets them into a crappy margin business (they have 60%+ margins on their blend of products, TVs are about 5%...)

Far more likely is an "Apple TV on steroids" which we all know is possible with an A5 chip, apps, etc etc....

Look for that offering... Not a TV....

I scanned eldiablojoe last night. He is a WW.

Edit: Got out of the hospital and have been sleeping mostly since then. Now I wait for the biopsy results. Thanks for all those concerned.

I'll follow your lead and vote for eldiablojoe as well.

And like others have mentioned, I'm glad things went well for you and I hope you good news from your biopsy.

Lastly, I'm kinda bummed that I haven't made the narration yet.:(

    Heres my probably wrong theory:
    Fashion island got them yesterday.
    South Coast got them today.
    Spectrum tomorrow? Maybe =\.

Mystikal: Irvine got some today, but I was the first person turned away, the person in front of me got the last ticket.

I called Mission Viejo today and they said to try again tomorrow. I think they are getting supplies in the afternoon, but holding them until the morning. My local Target (MV) said a week for theirs, but they only had less than 10 on opening day.

I'm going to try Irvine again tomorrow, but EARLIER this time! :) I'm still bummed I missed it by one today.

What's the next logical step in a computer interface? I used to say "Computer, show me the money" to open Quicken back in pre-OS X days. More of a gimmick than anything else, but imagine if the Finder and maybe even other apps became "speakable."

    Me: "Check mail"

Computer: "You have nine new messages. Would you like me to read them?"

    Me: "No, thanks."

(clicks on an email, reads message)

    Me: "Reply to this message"

    Computer: "Type or speak?

    Me: "Type"

    type-type-type

Me: "Computer, I'd like to add a photo of the kids to this email."

Computer: "iphoto has 6,813 pictures of the kids, which one would you like?"

Me: "One from the birthday party last week."

Computer: (a strip from iphoto appears) "Here are 23 from last week. I've highlighted the one where your wife fixed the red eye. Is that the one you want?"

Me: "Yes, that will be fine."

Computer adds the picture to stationery in the email, other pictures go away.

    Me: "Send the email"

Me: "...and order me a pizza."

This kind of thing can't be too far off. A 75 mhz Performa could do it in a rudimentary way. Imagine what a modern Mac may be able to do. "Speakeasy" has a nice ring to it.

I want mine to use the old-school Mac voice that Radiohead used in "Fitter Happier."
