still think the prices are a little steep for things that can be watched on an ipod. Sure you can use the output from the dock to play it on your tv, but if you have a slightly big tv, it doesn't look DVD quality.

You don't need the dock, you can just use a cable (http://podophile.com/2006/08/16/watch-ipod-videos-on-your-tv/).

I have to believe that movie downloads will be higher quality than the current TV shows.

So let's say that Steve announces iLife 07 and a release date for Leopard...

If I buy a new MacBook Pro on January 10, is it possible that either of those items might be a free "upgrade" or add-on once they're available? I'm trying to remember how that's worked in the past, but I just can't recall.

    Can anyone help me out?

I would guess no. If it happens within 14 days you could return the computer for a new one with the new software installed.

Playing that game with the HDMI dongle thingy hanging off an iPad looks, um, not ideal. Now, if it could stream it using AirPlay.

its got to run on the apple tv, airplay has lag, the game runs on the atv and the ios devices are controllers. ATV3?

He has a point about the XBox... It did start out slower but now is surely considered a predominant player in the market (no pun intended;) ).

Yeah, out of all 3 major options. [Sony, Nintendo, and miCrapsoft]

    Real hard. :p

I bet even I could have whipped up a console one night a few years back and kicked them out of the top 3. ;)

I remember reading sales figures in '04 between PS3 and XSUX. It was something like 74+ million PS3's to 13.x million XSUX's.:D

As has been mentioned several times throughout this thread, there are WAY more manufacturers AND models to contend with in the digital audio player market.

It would be very well possible. Remember, Thunderbolt is derived from LightPeak. One of the reasons to develop LightPeak was to transmit data at very fast rates over a distance. Essentially, not have everything so closed together.

In other words, you can the CPU in room A and the RAM in room B which is 20 feet away and get the same result. This is one of the reasons Intel developed LightPeak. There are many other reasons for development obviously.

However, Thunderbolt in its current stage is not suited for such lengthy exchange due to its copper nature. However, say you have a GFX cradle on your desk, you could well use Thunderbolt's current implementation to feed data. However, you'd need multiple implementations of Thunderbolt in order for it to work great. Currently, many GFX solutions use PCIe x16 interface which pretty much uses 8 GB/s bandwidth so one Thunderbolt interface will do fine and still have a nice 2GB/s overhead. However, the newer PCIe 3.0 interface pushes 16GB/s now so you'd need two Thunderbolt interfaces.
The one thing I wonder about is DRM. As it is now the connection to the display (and through DP) are protected (with either HDCP or DPCP). Do we know if LP/TB supports that protection (especially since the DP stream is actually separate from the PCIe stream)?

Apple Computer, Inc.: Proudly dying since 1976.

if apple really was dying, the last thing it needs to do is to listen to amateur marketing gurus and online petitions.

is the apple marketshare lower than it used to be in the 90s? yes, absolutely. that doesn't mean apple is dying - that it's on the blink of an extinction. a company with nearly $4 billion in cash reserve with no debt will be able to carry on for quite some time... (gee, how long have gateway been dying?)

funny you mention japan. last time i went to tokyo (oct. '03), i was hard pressed to find any store with an electronics/computer department that didn't carry any macs.

WTF? This is a computer, with a real mouse/trackpad. Click and hold til it wiggles, then click the x?

RIGHT-CLICK. COME ON APPLE, THIS ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE.

Hi! How does it feel there in 1997? Tip for you: don't bet on the Cleveland Indians.

(And how do you know there's not a menu option for the same thing when right-clicking anyway?)

As one of us already wrote, a lack of rumours does not necessarily entail a boring or unsurprisingly keynote.

On the other hand, am I the only one who feels that this is the first time that, only a few days before the keynote, virtually nothing is known even with modest certainty about the upcoming product announcements, and that such little reliable inside information has leaked?

Either Apple have nearly perfected their security mechanisms or, indeed, we shall only see incremental rather than revolutionary announcements at MWSF 2007.

Also, let's not conflate MWSF 2007 with 2007 itself.

Apple has a hugely impressive portfolio of inventions and possible products (see this tidal wave of patent filings in 2006). I am sure they will keep many of their cards for later in the year, and that MWSF will be a smart first move on the chessboard -- not a massive preemptive strike.

While I write this there are 176 posts already.

Since initially posted (3 hours ago), there have been an average .9 posts per minute with no signs of slowing. This rumor is really keeping everyone here quite entertained. Cheers to slacking off at work on a Friday!

    edit: corrected "off"

This ad will never work. People want ads that make them feel like teenage boys. I know this from Android ads. Steel and lasers, Apple. Steel and lasers!

Actually that is why it does work. Because it isn't steel and lasers. If you go back and watch the ad again at least twice there were medical tech references and at least one 'learning' tech. Apple is pushing these types of things to get rid of the 'it's a toy, talk. And the folks that decide to put iPads in a hospital or a school are often older folks and zippy steel etc doesn't appeal to them

I really don't car about close racing in F1 as I would just prefer teams the engineering to be unregulated (except for safety). My opinion I believe is in the minority.

Not at all. I yearn for the days of Can-Am and Group B racing - racing was dangerous and sex was safe back in those days.

For road based cars, I want close racing.

That has its limits though. Some of last season's GT1 races looked more like crash testing than racing.

You what? Well I guess its a matter of opinion but a 17" with a decent resolution is plenty! Heck, I even know people who use a 15" MBP as a desktop replacement. :)

i use a 12'' PB as my "desktop replacement". but if i want a "real" desktop 17'' would be way to small. why not get a laptop in the first place, if you are willing to go with a 17'' desktop.

I think they'll use 802.11 for wireless. That way, I can stream my music from iPod to Airport Express directly. Although Firewire/USB will still be the primary I/O.

You mean like when they standardised on CD's?

From what I recall, Philips began working on the compact disk project and Sony later on joined them in that venture.

Also, CDs were not easily accepted as a standard. It did take some time before everyone else adapted.

I must also point out that if you want to take the compact disk standard as an example of standardization, that CDs were the only format in its class. That is, there was no other competition for a standard format. Which brings us to today. Like the Betamax and VHS, we are seeing two formats of next generation's storage medium competing to become a standard.

Just keep in mind Sony's hit/miss ratio for standardization.;)
